White noise for babies:
what science actually says

White noise is one of the most effective tools for settling a newborn β€” and one of the most misused. Between overpowered machines and received wisdom, here is what research has actually established since 1990.

The founding study: 80% of babies asleep in 5 minutes

In 1990, Spencer and colleagues published the first randomized controlled trial on the subject in Archives of Disease in Childhood. The results were spectacular:

  • 80% of newborns exposed to white noise fell asleep in under 5 minutes
  • Versus only 25% in the control group

The mechanism is twofold: white noise masks sudden environmental stimuli (slamming doors, traffic, voices) and recalls the intrauterine environment β€” the womb is surprisingly loud, around 70-80 dB of constant sound (blood flow, heartbeat, digestion).

The 2024 meta-analysis: 9,428 babies studied

  • Fewer night wakings

The real danger: the volume, not the white noise

The pediatric recommendations are clear:

  • Under 50 dB at the baby's ear β€” the level of a quiet conversation
  • Source placed away from the crib (at least 2 meters / 6-7 feet), never inside it
  • Never at maximum volume, even to calm a crying spell
  • Not 24/7: babies also need to hear the sounds of life (voices, music) for language development

White noise, pink noise, womb sounds: what's the difference?

White noise spreads sound energy evenly across all frequencies β€” the "shhh" of an untuned radio. Pink noise softens the high frequencies, producing a deeper, gentler sound often better tolerated over time (rain, ocean). Womb sounds reproduce the sound environment of the womb and work particularly well before 3 months, during the newborn's "fourth trimester".

And lullabies? Loewy et al. (2013, Pediatrics) showed they have a specific effect on heart rate, breathing and feeding. The two approaches are complementary.

In practice: how to use white noise well

  1. Start the sound before bedtime, during the routine, to build an association
  2. Check the volume: at the baby's ear, you should be able to talk over it without raising your voice
  3. Use a timer: 30 to 45 minutes is enough for settling
  4. Match the sound to the age: womb sounds before 3 months, white/pink noise afterwards, nature sounds for older babies
